Aging Like a Fine ‘Whine’

Aging? Well, don’t get old without at least complaining about it!

Aging means our bodies are slowing down, and we’re more likely to get sick. Aging means we’re getting to the point where some part of the body will break down. If it’s an important body part, like our heart, aging ends right there – in death.

Seems horribly unfair, doesn’t it?

OK, that’s enough whining. It’s time to dry your tears and fight against aging.

Let’s take a look at what aging is doing to your body if you’re past 40:

Your mouth’s writing checks your stomach can’t cash. You can’t enjoy a chili dog anymore because you know it’s going to come back to haunt you. That sucks! An aging digestive system produces less digestive enzymes, which can lead to indigestion.

Tip: Digestive enzymes supplements after meals, especially meals high in fat or protein, may relieve this symptom of aging.

Say what? You have trouble understanding your landlady on the phone. On man! We lose our sensitivity to high-pitched tones during aging. (And it’s even harder to hear people who aren’t interesting–go figure!)

Tip: Protect your ears from noisy environments during middle age-even if you’re a rock star-so you’ll retain your ability to hear after aging.

Grandma’s hands. Your fingertips aren’t as plump as they once were–and oh no! That’s Grandma’s hand coming out of your sleeve! We start to lose some of our fat padding during aging–in all the wrong places–and the sun takes its toll on skin.

Tip: Use sunscreen on the backs of your hands, as well as on your face, if you want to keep your hands from “aging” you.

Grandma’s cellulite. Your cholesterol’s high, but your derriere is sagging. Where’s the justice? Aging affects our ability to excrete fat, so it sticks around (in the form of cholesterol and yes, that extra back seat padding). At the same time, aging makes us lose muscle. Now you know why Grandma always wore the swimsuit with the little skirt on it.

Tip: Eat a diet lower in saturated fat, and you’ll reverse the aging trend of added fat. Get into a weight training program (simple lifting or walking with hand-held weights) to reverse the muscle loss that comes with aging.

How dry we are. Your eyelids feel all sandpaper-y and you can’t swallow your vitamins without applesauce. That’s depressing! Aging makes it harder for our bodies to store water, which also makes it harder for us to get nutrients from our food.

Tip: Increase your intake of water by sipping ice water during the day and eating soups with meals to stay hydrated while you’re aging.

There goes my liver. Caffeine from your morning cup of coffee keeps you awake all night. Life is rough! Our aging livers can’t process out toxins like they used to.

Tip: Clean up your life. Eat pure food, drink pure water, and for heaven’s sake, stop drinking so much alcohol. Be kind to your liver and it will age gracefully along with you.

Aging also affects your nervous system, sexuality, coordination, and a bunch of other things. It’s awful!

But there are natural ways to fight them all. It just takes a little research and a bit of determination.

So go ahead and whine. Get it over with — and then get moving!…

So, when you started your search, did you use any of these terms? “Elderly parents, aging family members, senior citizens, aged or elder?” Or did you use what you thought the answer was? – “Senior Housing, Old people’s services, Senior Services, Geriatric Care Managers?” Try searching for both the “problem” and what you think the “answer” is. Either approach can work, but the results can vary tremendously. Looking for both the problem and your initial idea of the answer will give you a broader insight on possible solutions.

The second step, once you find a listing under whatever term you used in your search, is to vet the organization that is offering the advice. Just because a website is attractive and the company sounds like a “professional” organization does not mean it is. You need to ask some questions – no matter what the content.

1) How long have they been doing this type of work?

2) Who owns the company and what is their background?

3) Are the people who serve the clients (your parents) licensed, certified (not just holding a certificate – but certified, meaning – tested), experienced and bound to a standard of ethics.

4) Are fees explained clearly? Remember, a very low cost might speak for the service you get. Ask questions, because value is about quality, not just low cost. Make decisions based on quality and expertise, not just cost.

5) If they are a caregiving agency, be sure they are paying all the taxes, insurances and benefits that employees are entitled to in your state.

6) If this is a National Franchise – remember, almost anyone can buy a franchise. Ask for credentials and experience.

7) If this is a facility of care, be sure to check with the appropriate licensing division to be sure there are not citations or serious problems. This is very important.

8) Check for conflict of interest – be sure that the service you are using is “objective” and has a philosophy of “client centered” care.

9) Try never to chose an option with only one call – make at least three calls and always ask good questions.

Many families start their care journey with the guidance of a professional Geriatric Care Manager (GCM) who can give objective options based on current and future needs, client values and financial considerations. The GCM saves families time and money.

Be smart, start with a good direction or, at the very least, ask good questions and don’t be afraid to dig a little.…

The Paths Ahead

The Paths Ahead

This week I will be in Palm Coast with my son, daughter in law, and grandsons. In addition to spending time with my family, this is also a good time to think about my life, my plans for the future and also spend time to reach out to people in my network.

In this fast paced world, we need to take time to see where we have been, where we are going, where we want to go, and who is important to us. Being raised in the Midwest, I have always been a workaholic. When I was younger I rarely reflected. Now I realize how important reflection is for my health, my outlook, my business and my life.

Here are some things I am evaluating. This is a continuous process so I come back to many of these things again and again:

As a young man starting out in the world:

1. What did I stand for?

2. What did I want to be?

3. What impact did I want to make?

4. What were my passions

5. What did I think I needed to improve then?

6. Who were my friends? my mentors?

7. What did I do right and wrong in my first jobs?

8. What were my hobbies, my avocations?

9. What was I reading then?

10 Was I balanced? If so, why? If not, why not?

11. What were my spiritual feelings?

As I progressed in my life:

1. What things did I discard? Why?

2. What new things did I embrace? Why?

3. What friends and mentors did I discard? Why?

4. What friends and mentors did I embrace? What new friends and mentors did I make?

5. What were my biggest accomplishments? What did I learn?

6. What were my biggest failures? What did I learn?

7. Was I balanced? If so, Why? If not, why not?

8. What were my spiritual feelings?

These are not one answer questions, but drill down questions-perhaps lifelong questions.

Why do this?

1. I want to make sure that I have not strayed away from my core values and moral compass

2. I want to revisit old passions, avocations, and goals, to see if I should “try them on” again

3. What actions and directions should I take on?

4. If I retire tomorrow, or if I only have 5 years to live, what things are important? And what things would I do.

I think of Frost Poem, The Road Not Traveled:

“I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence

Two roads diverged in a wood

And I took the one less traveled by

And that has made all the difference”

We are faced daily with taking one of many roads. We discard some things, and embrace others. Those decisions change our lives. We can, however, look back and reflect and perhaps find new paths that take us to some of the roads we could have taken. In ways it is a second chance.…
