The U.S. spends $2.5 trillion a year on healthcare costs. We have very quickly become numb to the incomprehensibility of a trillion dollars. That’s $2,500,000,000,000. That’s 2,500 billion dollars. That’s 16% of the gross national product. It’s twice as much as the average amount other countries spend, but are we twice as healthy as the rest of the world? The answer is no.
And it’s just going to get worse in 2011 when the baby boomers storm Medicare. It has been estimated that Medicare has $30 to $40 trillion in unfunded liabilities. Where is that money going to come from? I imagine there will be printing presses involved but I for one do not intend to entrust my future health to that system.
Of course, it is a complete misnomer to call it a “healthcare” system in the first place. In fact, what we have is a disease management system focusing on pigeon-holing symptoms and then slicing or drugging them into submission. Very few resources in the system are dedicated to supporting people in cultivating good health practices.
According to David Katz, M.D., Associate Professor of Public Health at Yale University School of Medicine and Director of its Prevention Research Center, the four leading causes of death in the U.S. are heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. Fully 50% of those deaths are rooted in tobacco use, poor diet and insufficient physical activity. Lifestyle, not the medical system, determines the health of the nation. There is now a clear consensus among doctors practicing preventative medicine that food alone can reduce diabetes by 90%, cardiac heart disease by 80% and cancer by 60%. Yet there is virtually no funding for disease prevention through nutrition and lifestyle. How about making kale tax deductible?
It’s been proven that prevention translates not only to lives saved but to costs saved. Dr. Mark Hyman sees billions in medical savings through the addition of a few dietary supplements that cost pennies a day. He cites a study by the Lewin Group which found that the addition of calcium and vitamin D to the diets of Medicare participants would save the system $16.1 billion in costs related to osteoporosis over a 5 year period, and the addition of omega-3 fatty acid supplements would save an additional $3.2 billion associated with heart disease over the same period.
When will your insurance company and the government catch on? Don’t hold your breath. Instead, create your own health insurance plan by making healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes and avoiding the disease management system at all costs. Think of the money you spend on the gym, organic fruits and vegetables, and dietary supplements as the real premium insuring your good health.…

How Words Can Affect The Health of Children

There are many parents these days including myself who are overly concerned about what their kids are eating and that is justified as proper nutrition is one of the keys to living a long and healthy life. The one thing that we do not often think about is how our kids overall health is affected by the words we speak to them and the way that we say them. We know that words can have an effect on a child’s emotional health, but they can also affect their physical health as well. Here are some of the ways in which words can affect a child’s health.

Saying negative words about his or her physical appearance can lead to eating disorders in the future. There are a lot of children in this country who are suffering from eating disorders and the parents are not even aware of it. Some parents are so afraid of their children becoming overweight that they constantly watch what they eat and often scold or criticize them for their eating habits and this can cause them to lose their self-esteem. This can grow into a dislike for eating or wanting to be slim which can have a negative effect on their physical health.

Saying angry words to a child can erode their confidence and some children find comfort in eating food. There is no explanation how emotional eating develops, but once this dependence is formed, it is a very difficult to end.

If a child has a bad experience before bedtime with a parent such as harsh words, this can lead to nightmares for the child and result in them getting a poor nights rest. Frequent encounters of this kind leading to poor rest can lower their immune system and increase their possibility for getting a variety of sicknesses.

Children who do not live in a good home environment want to get away from their parents and spend time with their friends and once this happens, you have no control over what your child is eating. The younger kids tend to lean towards junk food when their parents are not around. Once you have lost the respect of your children, they do not want to listen to what you have to say and therefore, you have little influence on them in developing healthy eating habits.

Telling your child that he or she is useless will eventually make them believe it and once this happens, this will lead them to not take proper care of their body and their health. This could be a reason why some kids turn to drugs and smoking at an early age because of the self-image that their parents have portrayed them to be. If a child believes that he is worthless, he is certainly not going to take care of his body.

These are just a few of the ways that negative words can affect the overall health of a child. So many times as parents, we use negative words toward our children and do not focus on positive words. We need to realize that the words coming out of our mouths do have a huge impact on our children’s lives and health so make sure to choose your words carefully the next time that you are in a confrontation with one of your children and ” Think, Before You Speak .”

4. Use antiseptic soap or liquid gel to wash your hands before eating.
5. Regular cleaning of the tongue to remove extra coatings is necessary for oral hygiene.
6. Brush your teeth after every meal, at least two times – in morning and at night before going to bed. Toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles is best. Brush the teeth for at least two minutes.
7. To remove food particles use a proper up and down motion with the brush and then rinse your mouth thoroughly. If brushing is inconvenient at some places, rinse with warm or plain water for at least 30 seconds.
8. Avoid chewing betel nut to prevent erosion and cavities in the teeth.
9. Floss regularly between the teeth and use a fluoride toothpaste or baking soda.
10. Replace your toothbrush every three months.
11. Do not use your nails, toothpicks or other pointed things to clean the teeth because it can wear away the gums resulting in complete exposure of teeth.
12. Take a well balanced nutritious diet containing all minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water in the requisite proportions.
13. Never eat food while under stress, strain or worry as it hinders the digestive process. Avoid any other simultaneous activity as this forces the heart to pump more blood, showing down digestion and leading to various ailments including indigestion. Thus, you should avoid reading or studying while eating.
14. You sometimes tempted to over eat your favorite tasty foods. Avoid this as it distends the abdomen and leaves no space for water and air.
15. Breathe from the nostrils and not the mouth. Your nose is lined with small hairs that help filter the air. The air is warmed and moistened in the nose. Breathing from the mouth dries the pharynx, resulting in a dry cough and the formation of mucous.

Health is wealth, so goes the old adage. Now, with more ailments than ever to contend with, and with healthcare costs and insurance premiums continually rising beyond the reach of the average citizen, more and more persons are beginning to see the wisdom in that old adage. Vacations – Do They Promote Good Health?

In my research the other day, I came across a statement that sounded a little “off” to me It went something like this, and I believe I am quoting fairly accurately: “Traveling is an important part of life and necessary to survival.” Now, given the information that the author is a travel agent, the extremity of the statement can be understood, but what is the actual message that is being transmitted?
In my opinion, traveling, per se, is not necessary for survival, but perhaps, VACATIONING might be! Most of us are already aware that the act of getting from one place to another can be nearly as stressful, or more so, than the every-day stresses of being home and/or on the job. Yeh, yeh… I know, there are people who just love their jobs and the benefits those jobs bring and just can’t abide being away from the work place for any length of time. But, they are the exceptions to the rule, rather than the norm. So, if that travel agent had inserted the word VACATIONING for travel, I would have a tendency to give the nod of approval… of course that person is biased. I would be too if I were selling travel!
This brings me a bit closer to the real subject for this article: THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF VACATIONING
I must begin with a “disclaimer”… I am not a medically trained person. I do not have a degree in any health-related field and would like the reader to know that the opinions expressed herein are merely that: opinions.. and based on subjective observations over a fairly long period of time. No science was utilized to gain any information and/or draw conclusions. What I do know is that the stress level of life in this 21st century is at least as high as in any other period in the modern age. As medical science overcomes disease after disease and finds effective treatments for those tough problems they can’t completely defeat, it seems that focus should narrow down to aspects of wellness studies… more than has been the practice up to this point. Probably, one reason the study of stress related health issues has lagged other areas of research is that the study of the mind and its workings is still an inexact science.
A first century Roman philosopher wrote: “Voyage, travel and change of place impart vigor.” So, it would seem, the health benefits of a vacation and change of locale have been observed for quite some time! Indeed, an annual vacation has been shown to reduce BP, heart rate, and the production of stress hormones, and actually reduces the occurrence of heart attacks by a significant amount. As a probable result of these findings, a number of countries in the UK and Europe have mandated, by law, that workers are entitled to an annual vacation of a specified duration. I, of course, heartily endorse such a policy… how about here in this country?

Enjoyment of Eating – Enjoyment of Health

Enjoyment of food is just as important as eating healthy food. That may surprise you, coming from a nutritionist who preaches prevention. I try to convince everyone who will listen, that a healthy diet is necessary for a good quality of life because good health is important for a good quality of life.
But the enjoyment of food is also a necessary ingredient of a good life. Although it is true that a healthy diet improves your life by improving your health, if you hate what you are eating, your quality of life will suffer. You probably won’t stick with it anyway. What determines what we love to eat or hate to eat? We experience life through our senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Three of these connections with our world impact our experience of food.
We taste sweet, sour, bitter and tart. Some tastes give us pleasure while others are repulsive to us. The desire for good tasting food entices us to eat and thereby, nourish our bodies. When elderly people lose their sense of taste they begin to eat less and their weight begins to drop, sometimes to a point that is life-threatening.
Our sense of smell is an equally important way we experience food. There are hundreds of odors that we experience every day. They can stimulate feelings and memories that we may not even be aware of. Have you ever noticed a smell and gave you a feeling that you couldn’t quite put your finger on?
The smell of food can have a powerful impact on what we find pleasurable or distasteful. This reaction to smells is deep-rooted in our childhood. It can sometimes have more to do with memories and emotions than it does with the quality of the food. The smell of my grandmother’s rolls cooking in the oven brought up feelings that couldn’t be explained simply by how good they tasted.
Smells have a lot to do with what we think of as comfort food. This visceral reaction to smell is one of the reasons that it is so hard to change the way we eat.
The texture of food, which we experience through our sense of touch, is also an important part of our culinary experience. Crunchy or smooth, chewy or tough, the feel of food is also associated with pleasure or repulsion. Some of us enjoy smooth while others need crunchy or chewy to feel there is substance to their food. A good example of personal preference for texture is peanut butter. Everyone seems to have a definite preference for either crunchy or smooth.
The problem with enjoyment of food in affluent societies.
The problem with enjoyment of food is that those of us, who live in affluent societies, where there are a myriad of choices, can become so obsessed with enjoyment that we forget that food is also for nourishment.
Our natural attraction to food should ensure that we eat enough to keep us well nourished. But is our food nourishing? Are we getting enough of the things our bodies really needs? Nature has provided everything we need for good health, but our food suppliers have tampered with nature. By processing and refining, and the natural balance has been lost. Our pleasure-seeking has become dominant and our bodies suffer the consequences.
Some food cravings are like addictions. Sugar, salt and fat added to foods in excess can impel us to eat more than we need. We can get control of our addictions to them by gradually reducing the amounts we eat. We can’t eliminate them, as with drug, alcohol or smoking addictions, because they are an essential part of our food supply. But we can cut back substantially.
Choosing whole, unprocessed foods and moderate amounts of healthy fats are great ways to cut the excess sugar and fat in our diet. Using herbs and spices to season food in creative ways can improve the quality of our food while reducing the amount of salt and sugar we use. Use olive oil or other healthy oils instead of butter.
Enjoyment and nourishment don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A fresh fillet of grilled grouper is just as delicious as a grilled steak, and roasted vegetables can be tastier than French fries. When we use really fresh foods, we don’t need salt and sugar. Their natural taste is delicious. This is especially true for locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables picked before they are ripe and transported over long distances, aren’t nearly as tasty. You can have the best of both worlds. You can have great taste and great nutrition at the same time. And having both is essential for a truly great quality of life. Bon Appetite!…
